BOOKS!!
It's been ages since I posted anything. I have not been busy....I am just living my life a day at a time. I have also been dedicating a lot of time to reading. I love books, but it reached a point where i rarely had time to read, i was either working, sleeping or too exhausted to function so I would just be on my couch watching my favorite YouTube programs and series. I do not have TV...well, I have a screen but i do not pay the monthly subscription fee, so I get all my entertainment online.
So, i started reading and I can say that I am doing very very well. My favourite reads so far have been Diane Von Furstenberg's The Woman I wanted to be. I didn't know about Diane until I watched a reality TV show (back when I had TV subscription) that was about getting a brand ambassador for House of DVF. I was fascinated by her and I immediately googled and read all I could find about her. I had a crush....like I always do whenever I engage in any form of media where there is a successful woman. It is a kind of adoration. I feel like I want to see life through their eyes, feel their experiences and learn how they came to be who they are. This book was insightful and I learnt much more about Diane than there is on the internet. I was intrigued. It's one of those books I will always read....yes, I do read books multiple times. It's like watching a favourite movie over and over again....some favourites never get old! :) ps...I love Diane
Another book that I really enjoyed is The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. I cried. This book centers around a family that moves from Seattle to Alaska. From the civilization to the wild. The struggles of a young girl trying not only to cope with the isolation, but also from the effects of an abusive father. This book is raw. It will make you feel all kinds of things.
When I was young I read a series of books called pacesetters. They were all by African writers. I loved them and I read as many as a hundred books....or close. I used to keep a list but I lost it. Since then I have read several books by African writers but not so many. So when I watched Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (I haven't googled the spelling and I think I got that right!) in a TED talk episode, i got curious, her English was good. There is a way she pronounces her words that instantly catches ones attention. I had heard about her, but I had never read any of her books. So i went searching and found two books, Purple Hibiscus and Half a Yellow Sun. I like the characters in the books, I love how she gives live to each one of them, and the unique story behind each one of them. I want more from her.
I also read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. The title alone is fascinating. In my world, any lifestyle that is different from my lifestyle is intriguing. I would read about monks in a monastery, about nuns in a convent, about Eskimos....about any other lifestyle that differs from mine. The book was catchy, it piqued my interest and I realized how important freedom is, the daily freedom we take for granted. Freedom to eat, move and socialize as we like.
I had a run in with Chasing Red and Always Red two sequels by Isabelle Ronin. These two were romantic novels. I felt giddy and it reminded me of those feelings one develops early on before the heart gets broken and one realizes that love is not always a fairy tale. But I did enjoy the break from the more serious and engaging books.
Yesterday i started reading Gabrielle Union's 'We're Going to Need some more wine'. I am already hooked! I can't wait for my commute from work to home and home to work so that I can continue with what is developing to be the life and experience of one of the greatest actresses of our time. I will write about it once I am done.....can someone recommend some great reads for me?
